Byron Nelson Prize Awarded to Tom Lehman

The Salesmanship Club awarded Tom Lehman with the first Byron Nelson Prize at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship Opening Ceremony on Tuesday.

The Byron Nelson Prize is awarded to a person or organization in the golf world who exemplifies the ideals of "giving back" that Byron Nelson personified. Each year the Salesmanship Club will solicit nominations for this award from PGA TOUR, Nationwide Tour and Champions Tour professional golfers, as well as golf writers and reporters from around the world.

The Salesmanship Club of Dallas awarded $100,000 to the charity of Lehman's choice. Lehman directed this charitable contribution to the McKenzie Monks Foundation, an organization that helps kids cope with cancer.

"Tom and his wife, Melissa, have given back to the community in so many important areas, including raising more than $4 million for the Children's Cancer Research Fund at the University of Minnesota," said Salesmanship Club of Dallas President Mac Wesson. "Like Byron, he is a man of great faith, great courage and great perseverance. He is clearly a man of whom Byron was proud and who is clearly deserving of receiving this inaugural award."

EDS Auctions Off Autographed Pinball Machine to Benefit Salesmanship Club Youth and Family Centers

EDS will auction off an Orange County Choppers (OCC) themed pinball machine, autographed by PGA TOUR players participating in the 2007 EDS Byron Nelson Championship, as well as the Teutuls - the creative forces behind OCC and stars of the international hit television show "American Chopper." This is EDS' second year to host an online auction, with all proceeds benefiting Salesmanship Club Youth and Family Centers.

In EDS' 2007 pinball game, Ultimate Golf Ball Frenzy, the squirrels pose as the Teutuls and build three choppers in the basement of the Golf Ball Works factory. Further incorporating the chopper theme, parts of the machine have been done in custom chrome, including the legs, side rails, flipper bats and ball shooter.

A replica of this one-of-a-kind pinball machine is in the OCC shop. EDS presented it to the Teutuls to kick off the fabrication of the EDS Byron Nelson Championship Chopper, which will also be up for bid.

The online auction opens Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m. CDT and closes Monday, April 30 at 7 p.m. CDT. You can access the auction at

PGA TOUR Golf Professionals' Wives Visit New Charity Program

Today, PGA TOUR golf professionals' wives and friends visited the Family Works Center (FWC) and heard stories of hope for families with troubled adolescents and young children. Participants included Stacey Schultz, Sandy Perry, Julie Petrovic, Radha Ollidina, Amy Garrigus, Amanda Byrd and Sybi Kuchar.

This new facility for kids (birth through age 15) and their families has four programs, combining prevention, early intervention and treatment services:

  • Therapeutic After School Program - An intensive after school treatment program for adolescents ages 12 through 15 and their families
  • Infant-Child Comprehensive Assessment Program - Family-driven, strength-based comprehensive assessment services for young children (ages birth through six) showing emerging signs of difficulties
  • Family Life Education - Skill-based parent-child training for families with young children (ages birth through six) experiencing or at-risk for emotional and behavioral problems
  • Family Therapy - Outpatient therapy for children birth to age 20 and their families who are experiencing emotional and behavioral problems

Children of SCYFC Program Pay Tribute to Byron Through Music

Today, the J. Erik Jonsson Community School Chorale sang a tribute to Byron Nelson, entitled "You Can Do Anything." The song, boasting music and lyrics by Jonsson School's own music specialist Kevin Roberts, is the children's way of giving back to a man whose legacy will continue for years through the J. Erik Jonsson Community School and the Salesmanship Club Youth and Family Centers.

As requested by many members of the media, TOUR professionals and golf patrons, the following are the song lyrics as performed:

I knew a man
Lord Byron was his name
Champion all around
Golf was his claim to fame

He taught so many
By example every day
The wise lord Byron
Once I heard him say

"You can do anything
You feel you need to do"
Reach for the stars
Keep the faith in you

"You can do anything"
Just keep your head held high
Respect all that He has given
He'll give you wings to fly

"You can do anything
You feel you need to do"
Reach for the stars
Keep the faith in you

Even though his skill
Earned him great rewards
The most precious one of all
Was his friendship with the Lord

The game's finest man
Follower of Christ
Humble and gentle
A rich blessed life
