Saturday Tribute Events

The EDS Byron Nelson Championship will celebrate the life and legacy of Byron Nelson on Saturday, April 28 in two special ways. First, Byron Nelson's Congressional Gold Medal Celebration will take place at 11 a.m. on the Four Seasons Wedding Lawn. Then at 3 p.m., the tournament will stop play for a moment of silence.

In September, 2006, Byron Nelson became the first golfer to be awarded a Congressional Gold Medal. The United States Congress voted unanimously to award and honor Byron Nelson with the nation's highest civilian honor. Peggy Nelson and Congressman Michael C. Burgess of Denton will participate in this special ceremony. CBS Sports Anchor Jim Nantz will serve as master of ceremonies. This celebration is open to the public.

Official play will stop for the first time in PGA TOUR history to honor Byron with a moment of silence at 3 p.m. Salesmanship Club of Dallas President Mac Wesson will declare this moment of silence, and the PGA TOUR horn will sound to signal the beginning. At the end of the moment of silence, a squadron of F/A- 18s from NAS JRB Forth Worth will cross the course at 1,500 feet.

Troops Find Respite at EDS Byron Nelson Championship

U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel John Baker had a plan to include his love of golf in his most recent deployment in Iraq. After all, a sand wedge, a putter and some golf balls would be a nice reprieve from the daily pressures of fighting a war thousands of miles away from home.

The rigors of commanding members of the fourth infantry, however, didn't leave much time for working on his golf game. On Friday, Baker found a better way to relax while watching the world's best golfers at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship in the America Supports Our Troops villa located on the 18th green.

The Salesmanship Club, in conjunction with EDS, the Four Seasons Hotel and the U.S.O., established a program that offers tickets and prime seats to this weekend's tournament to active military personnel. Troops are treated to complimentary food and beverages in a relaxed environment.

"This is wonderful," Baker said. "It is special and a little emotional for people to show their gratitude and appreciation for what we do this way. I know a lot of the members of my unit are looking forward to coming out this weekend."

More than 200 tickets were distributed to Baker's base Fort Hood, while another 30 or so were distributed through the U.S.O. in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

That is how Gunnery Sergeant Bobby Benge and Sergeant Nick Bredehoft found their way to the tournament on Friday. The U.S. Marine recruiters were truly appreciative of the hospitality provided by EDS. "This just shows people really do care," Benge said. "It is my first time to the Byron Nelson and it is an awesome environment."

America Supports our Troops at the Championship is sponsored by EDS Friday through Sunday and was sponsored by the Four Seasons Hotel on Thursday.

EDS Byron Nelson Championship Draws Volunteer EDSers from Around the Globe

Last Friday, Paulo Ramos, an EDS employee in Mexico, hopped on his black pearl Harley Davidson motorcycle and headed north for the 2007 EDS Byron Nelson Championship.

He rode 1,200 miles from Huixquilucan to Dallas to be part of the 2007 tournament. Ramos did the same thing last year and volunteered in the information center to help Spanish speakers at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship.

Ramos enjoyed helping out at the tournament so much last year that he decided to participate again. He's one of nearly 300 other EDS employees who have come from 12 countries to serve as volunteers at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship.

EDSers make up 25 percent of the total number of volunteers working at the Championship. They have come from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, the United States, and for the first time this year -- Chile, Columbia, Hungary, Ireland, Malaysia and the Netherlands.

Programs See Incredible '06 Outcomes

Salesmanship Club Youth and Family Centers programs saw incredible outcomes this past year. Below is a quick snapshot of some of the great results:

  • Researchers at The University of Texas at Dallas have been following Jonsson School graduates for eight years. Among these graduates, only one confirmed dropout has been documented.
  • The majority (about two-thirds) of the Jonsson school grads who've already completed high school have gone on to college.
  • 100 percent of Family Therapy clients surveyed reported high satisfaction with SCYFC services.
  • Overall, more than 5,000 children and family members were served in 2006.
